Sony Music
Designed back in the 1990s, the Sony Music building in Athens was an important design landmark that embodied the energy and excitement of Greece’s changing cultural scene. The project consisted of incorporating a new envelope on top of the existing building, employing use of aluminium composite panels, and working with a core colour palette to support the distinctive design.
The architectural expression of the building is achieved by the playful exchange of juxtaposed geometric elements. On one facade, a rectangular frame housing waved aluminium panels sits adjacent to two porthole windows that punctuate the aluminium-covered curved panel. The same approach is used on the other side, replacing the porthole windows with square ones. Alongside their distinct aesthetic, these aluminium louvres also control the entrance of sunlight into the building.
A similar design informs the approach to the interior. Blue partitions curve throughout open plan offices, curved elements streak across the ceilings, and large circular spotlights warm the interiors.
