Mess Hall Libya, North Africa

2012

This project offers a proposal for a military building in Libya. While the building spans an area of 3.200m², the project needed to meet two key needs: functionality and discretion. Located in the heart of the desert, the site includes the main mess hall, as well as a bakery and ancillary buildings.

Two geometric volumes combine to make a whole. A large circular building at the north of the site is connected to a wide-set rectangular hall. On the facade, semi-circle entrances are covered with aluminium lattices to ensure privacy while regulating light entrances and airflow. With an emphasis on easy circulation throughout the interior, these two volumes are seamlessly joined in an open structural formation.

The building is made from local materials, blending sand and concrete. In this way, the expansive site is more easily able to integrate within its surrounding environment. Palm trees punctuate the perimeter, balancing the neutral aspect with green elements.
