Design As Cultural Strategy: Can Hospitality Recover Places?

Lukas Bobotis will be sharing ideas during a discussion that moves beyond heritage as a source of visual inspiration, and toward heritage as a framework for responsible development. It centers on the potential of hospitality not to decorate what already exists, but to support the recovery of place – culturally, environmentally, and socially.

How can we build in remote or under-recognized locations without distorting them? What kind of investment, partnerships, and design approach is needed to make these sites viable, economically and meaningfully? And how can architecture step away from spectacle, toward a model of long-term care?

Drawing from active projects and lived experience, the conversation will highlight strategies that engage local materials, memory, and communities, offering realistic paths for those who seek to design hospitality with depth, relevance, and impact.
